United Nations Secretary General António Guterres has cautioned member states about the consequences of not reforming the UN Security Council. He has also urged countries to make progress on the reform process, which has remained stalled.
Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Haq made the remarks in response to comments by External Affairs Minister Dr S. Jaishankar, who said the UN Security Council needs reform to remain relevant as UN membership has nearly quadrupled since the organisation was founded in 1945.
Haq said Guterres has repeatedly maintained that the expansion of the United Nations should be accompanied by an expansion of the Security Council. He also stressed the need for the council to become more representative of the wider UN membership.
