The United Nations has welcomed India’s approval of the 1.86 lakh crore rupee Green Energy Corridor Phase III, describing the grid strengthening and battery storage initiative as an important step for the country’s people and economy.
UN Climate Change Executive Secretary Simon Stiell said the project would help India make greater use of its expanding renewable energy capacity, meet increasing electricity demand and further strengthen its position as a global leader in solar energy.
Stiell said the initiative would support the integration of renewable energy into India’s power system while contributing to economic growth. He also highlighted the importance of battery storage for large economies such as India, particularly for energy security and continued economic development.
He said stronger power grids and expanded battery storage infrastructure could create employment opportunities in manufacturing, construction and energy storage as the global shift towards renewable energy and clean technologies gathers pace.
The Union Cabinet has approved the Green Energy Corridor Phase III with a total outlay of 1,86,405 crore rupees. The project includes Central Financial Assistance of 54,082 crore rupees and will focus on strengthening intra state transmission systems and supporting the deployment of Battery Energy Storage Systems.
