Rowing Experts Question Fitzroy River Choice for Brisbane 2032 Olympics

The decision to hold Olympic rowing events at Rockhampton’s Fitzroy River during the Brisbane 2032 Games has drawn concerns from several experienced Australian rowing figures. They have questioned whether the venue can provide suitable competition conditions while also delivering a lasting benefit for the region.

The river has attracted attention because crocodiles are present in and around the area. However, concerns among rowing professionals also extend to the movement of the water, possible changes in river conditions and the limited accommodation available in Rockhampton, which has a population of around 80,000.

Queensland Premier David Crisafulli said an independent technical assessment had found the Fitzroy River suitable for fair rowing and canoeing competitions during the 2032 Olympics. Despite that finding, some former elite athletes and coaches remain concerned about holding an Olympic event around 600 kilometres from Brisbane.

Former world championship medallist Andrew Butler said the venue could require significant infrastructure spending to meet Olympic standards. He also questioned whether such investment would create a useful long term legacy for Queensland.

Three time Olympic champion Drew Ginn has separately raised concerns about water depth, the characteristics of the river and the possibility of flooding. He said changing water conditions could potentially affect different lanes and therefore influence competitive fairness.

Other rowing figures have also suggested that venues closer to Brisbane could provide stronger long term benefits. The debate is now focused on whether the Fitzroy River can meet the technical requirements of an Olympic rowing course while providing suitable infrastructure and a meaningful legacy after the Games.
