Samsonova Reaches Guadalajara Semifinal After Defeating Top Seed
Liudmila Samsonova has reached the semifinal of the Guadalajara Open after defeating top seed Marta Kostyuk in a three set contest in Mexico. The eighth seeded Russian recovered from losing the opening set to win the match 4 to 6, 6 to 2, 7 to 5.
The result marks Samsonova’s first semifinal appearance of 2026. She had reached three quarterfinals earlier in the season and last made it to a semifinal in June 2025.
Kostyuk entered the tournament as the top seed but played her first match only in the third round after receiving a first round bye and advancing from the second round without playing following Taylor Townsend’s withdrawal.
Samsonova will face Peyton Stearns in the semifinal. In the other semifinal, defending champion Iva Jovic will meet sixth seed Cristina Bucsa as the tournament moves toward its final stages.
