Volkswagen Reconsiders Seat’s Future as Auto Industry Faces Rising Chinese Competition

Volkswagen is reviewing the long term future of its Spanish car brand Seat as the global automobile industry undergoes major changes. The company is restructuring its business while facing stronger competition from Chinese manufacturers and the growing cost of shifting toward electric vehicles.

Seat has not introduced a new model since 2020, leaving the brand with a limited product pipeline at a time when automobile companies are investing heavily in new electric and technology focused vehicles. Seat represented less than 3 percent of Volkswagen’s global vehicle deliveries in 2025.

The brand is also facing increasing competition from its sister company Cupra. Cupra was launched as a separate brand in 2018 and has expanded its presence in the electric vehicle market. It overtook Seat in annual sales for the first time last year, adding to questions about the future role of the two brands within the wider Volkswagen group.

Volkswagen has said that Seat’s future beyond its current product cycle is still being evaluated and that several possible options remain under consideration beyond 2030. The company has not announced a final decision on the brand’s long term direction.

The situation comes as established European automakers deal with weaker demand, major investment requirements for electric vehicles and increased competition from Chinese manufacturers. Chinese car companies have expanded their international presence, putting additional pressure on traditional brands that are already working to reduce costs and improve efficiency.

Volkswagen has been carrying out a broader transformation programme as part of its efforts to adjust its business to changing market conditions. The company’s future plan includes changes across its brands and operations as it seeks to strengthen its position in an increasingly competitive global automobile market.

The developments surrounding Seat reflect the wider transformation taking place in the automotive industry. Established manufacturers are reassessing product portfolios and investment priorities as electric vehicles, new technologies, changing consumer demand and international competition reshape the global market.
