Micron Technology is set to significantly expand semiconductor assembly and testing operations at its Sanand facility in Gujarat next year, marking a major increase in the company’s production activity in India. Micron CEO Sanjay Mehrotra announced the planned expansion while speaking at the opening of SEMICON India 2026 in New Delhi.
Mehrotra said India’s semiconductor sector has moved beyond long term plans and is now entering a phase focused on actual production and execution. He highlighted the role of the India Semiconductor Mission and its latest phase in creating a stronger foundation for semiconductor manufacturing and related activities in the country.
Micron has operated in India for seven years and currently employs more than 7,000 people directly. Its operations also support additional employment across the wider semiconductor and electronics value chain, according to the company.
Commercial production at Micron’s Sanand facility began earlier this year. The plant is focused on assembling and testing memory products, with finished DRAM and NAND products now being shipped from Gujarat to customers in global markets. The facility is the first semiconductor assembly and testing project established under the India Semiconductor Mission.
The company expects to assemble and test tens of millions of chips at the Sanand facility during 2026. Production is planned to rise to hundreds of millions of chips in 2027, representing a substantial increase in the scale of operations at the Gujarat facility.
Micron’s operations in India cover several parts of its technology network. The company carries out memory chip design work in Bengaluru and Hyderabad, while the Gujarat facility handles assembly and testing before finished products are supplied to customers. Its India based engineering teams have also contributed to more than 3,700 patents, inventions and disclosures, according to Mehrotra.
Mehrotra also pointed to the growing importance of memory and storage as artificial intelligence applications expand. AI systems depend heavily on data, creating greater demand for memory products that can provide higher capacity, faster performance and improved power efficiency.
The expansion at Sanand comes as India continues to develop a broader semiconductor ecosystem covering chip design, manufacturing, assembly, testing, packaging, equipment, research and talent development. SEMICON India 2026 is bringing together companies and other stakeholders from across these areas as India works to strengthen its position in the global semiconductor supply chain.
