India’s Chip Industry Moves Toward a Wider Semiconductor Ecosystem

India’s semiconductor sector is entering a new phase as SEMICON India 2026 brings together companies, policymakers, investors, researchers, startups and other stakeholders from across the global electronics industry. The three day event is being held from September 17 to 19 at Yashobhoomi in New Delhi under the theme “Silicon to Systems: Building the Ecosystem.”

The focus of the event goes beyond semiconductor manufacturing and covers the wider value chain needed to support a strong electronics industry. Areas being discussed include chip design, manufacturing technology, artificial intelligence and digital transformation, supply chains, materials, product development, research, startups, innovation and workforce development.

The event comes as India continues efforts to build domestic semiconductor capabilities and attract global participation in the sector. Under the Semicon India Programme, 12 projects have been approved, while the government has also moved ahead with the next phase, Semicon 2.0, aimed at strengthening the country's semiconductor ecosystem.

The semiconductor push also includes support for research, design and innovation. According to the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, design tools are being provided to academic institutions and startups, while several startups have received approval under the Design Linked Incentive scheme.

SEMICON India 2026 is bringing together more than 500 exhibitors, international companies, speakers and delegations from several countries. The programme also includes country roundtables, a startup and innovation showcase, a student hackathon and workforce development activities.

The developments reflect a broader effort to expand India's role across the semiconductor value chain, from chip design and manufacturing to packaging, materials, equipment, electronics systems, research and talent development.

The event is therefore placing greater attention on building the complete ecosystem around semiconductors rather than focusing on chip production alone. With global companies and Indian industry participants meeting in New Delhi, the discussions are expected to centre on investment, collaboration, technology development and the skills required to support the sector's expansion.
