Hindi Diwas is being observed across India today to honour the importance and widespread use of the Hindi language. On this day in 1949, the Constituent Assembly approved Hindi in the Devanagari script as the official language of the country. Hindi is now among the most widely spoken languages worldwide and is the first language of more than 52 crore people.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah will take part in the Hindi Diwas 2026 programme and the sixth All India Rajbhasha Sammelan in Navi Mumbai today.

The two day All India Official Language Conference is being organised in Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra, by the Department of Official Language under the Ministry of Home Affairs. The event focuses on the connection between Hindi and Maharashtra's diverse linguistic, cultural and literary heritage.

During today's opening session, Amit Shah will present the Rajbhasha Gaurav and Rajbhasha Kirti Awards for 2025 to 26. A number of important books and publications are also scheduled to be released during the programme.

An exhibition has been arranged with stalls representing different institutions, organisations, banks and ministries. One of the major highlights of this year's conference will be a special discussion on the National Song Vande Mataram.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Sunetra Pawar, several Members of Parliament, scholars, writers, educationists and senior officials are also expected to participate in the conference.
